The Strawberry Line

The Strawberry Line cycle route.

The Strawberry Line cycle route.

Remember steam trains? They were dirty, slow and huge contributors to the greenhouse effect. But they were spectacular and much-loved, and, to be fair, no-one had heard of the greenhouse effect in the ‘fifties and ‘sixties. Some of the railway lines still remain, unused and overgrown, mostly. Bridges have been turned into roundabouts, tunnels have collapsed. Or, in some cases, they have been turned into cycle paths (like the Bath tunnels cycle route, visited recently). Another is the Strawberry Line, which I cycled today, and which ran from Cheddar (of cheese and gorge fame) to Yatton where the line connected to the Bristol to Weston-super-Mare, and beyond, line. The name is because the Somerset town of Cheddar was the centre of the strawberry trade in days long gone. They were sent from there all over the country, by train.
